Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have become an increasingly visible component of digital healthcare marketing, powering appointment scheduling, symptom-triage assistance, lead generation, and post-treatment follow-up across hospital websites, mobile applications, and messaging platforms. This paper examines the role of AI chatbots in digital healthcare marketing and patient communication, with emphasis on the specific chatbot functions patients find most useful, the factors that build or erode patient trust in conversational AI, and the extent to which chatbot deployment improves marketing outcomes such as lead conversion and patient retention. Primary data was collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 patients who had interacted with a healthcare chatbot and 50 healthcare-marketing professionals responsible for deploying such tools, supplemented by secondary data from industry reports and academic literature. Descriptive statistics, weighted-mean ranking, chi-square tests, and correlation analysis were used to interpret the data. Findings indicate that appointment scheduling and instant query resolution are the most valued chatbot functions, while empathy deficit and data-privacy concerns remain the leading barriers to deeper patient trust. Marketing professionals report meaningful gains in lead-response time and after-hours engagement, though most organizations continue to rely on hybrid human-AI escalation models f or sensitive conversations. The study concludes with recommendations for healthcare organizations on chatbot design, escalation protocols, and transparent communication of AI involvement to strengthen both marketing effectiveness and patient trust.
