GLOBAL PHILOSOPHIES OF MACHINE ETHICS: CROSS-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES ON AI AND HUMAN VALUES

This paper investigates how diverse philosophical traditions inform ethical approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI). While AI ethics discourse has been dominated by Western paradigms of utilitarianism, deontology, and rights-based ethics, nonWestern traditions—including Confucian, Buddhist, African Ubuntu, and Indigenous frameworks—offer alternative visions of relationality, responsibility, and collective wellbeing. By synthesizing cross-cultural perspectives on machine ethics, the paper argues for a pluralistic ethical framework capable of addressing the complex global challenges posed by AI.
